Watch before entering
Take time to observe where people enter, where waves break and how surfers return to position. Ask your instructor which area your group should use. A beach with lots of surfers is not proof that every part of it suits your level.
Ask about priority locally
Discuss wave priority, paddling routes and what to do if you lose control of your board before going out. Rules work best when everyone understands them in context. When unsure, give space and ask rather than assuming you have right of way.
Make your intentions clear
Avoid following closely behind a surfer taking off. Keep enough space to manage your own equipment, and listen when a lifeguard or instructor asks you to move. If something goes wrong, check that others are all right and communicate calmly.
Choose a session you can manage
Respecting the shared space includes staying within your ability. If conditions or the crowd make it difficult to control where you go, return to shore and reassess with an instructor. Progress is easier when attention can go to learning rather than simply coping.
